Urban Landscapes At Night

10Nov10

I was out last night in Liverpool city centre with my trusty tripod attempting to capture some urban landscapes. To be honest, I just wanted to have a play, learn a little bit & actually use my camera for a change.

Have you photographed your journey to the Ship and Mitre?

I like the mix of old and new in the last shot, also the whoosh of light, whatever that effect is called :)

I think they’re just called light trails resulting from leaving the shutter open for a long period. The vehicle in question was the B59a bus to Croxteth :)

I prefer whoosh! Oh not the night bus from Harry potter? How disappointing :(

Planning on more night time stuff?

  2. Excellent shots. I have always enjoyed pictures at night. Pardon the naivity, but how do you get such good “night” pictures? Is it a special lens, or a whole different type of camera?

The only additional equipment I use is a tripod & a remote shutter release. Most of these shots were taken with around a 8 second exposure, hence the light trails from cars in some of them. The tripod keeps the camera steady & the shutter release stops you shaking the camera by having to touch it. This way you can still have an aperture of around f/8 for sharpness & a low ISO setting to reduce noise.

  3. Thanks, I will give it a try.

Cool, like the photos where there are car light stripe through the road.
I think your exposure pretty long, my guess 30s.
